Horatio Garden Sheffield & East Celebrates Three Civic Trust Awards
We are delighted to share that Horatio’s Garden Sheffield and East has been recognised withCivic Trust Award – three awards at this year’s Civic Trust Awards! The thoughtfully designed garden was acknowledged for its quality and impact, receiving the following accolades:
Recognising architectural excellence and contributions to the local community.
- Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design – Honouring inclusive design practices that are accessible to all.
- Special Award for Neuro-Inclusive Places, sponsored by Buro Happold – A new award that celebrates environments designed with neurodivergence in mind.
The garden, which was originally showcased at the 2023 RHS Chelsea Flower Show where it was awarded a Gold Medal and Best in Show, has since been transformed from a disused car park into a stunning therapeutic landscape at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
Judges praised the garden for its deep connection to the local heritage, with one stating; “Horatio’s Garden is an exemplar of inclusive, patient-led design—shaped by its users, loved by its volunteers, and rooted in the fabric of Sheffield’s natural and industrial heritage.” The space is fully accessible and has been carefully curated to offer a serene, supportive environment for individuals coping with spinal injuries and other life-altering conditions. Every detail, from seating to plantings, is thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of its diverse users, providing a tranquil space for reflection, rehabilitation, and rest.
This garden is part of the Horatio’s Garden charity initiative, which is dedicated to creating beautiful, accessible outdoor spaces at spinal injury centres across the UK. It stands as a beacon of accessibility, sustainability, and community spirit.

Expansion Project Underway in Sheffield
We have made significant progress on our local project which is all about expansion. We are removing an existing concrete slab to make way for a state-of-the-art reinforced steel slab and structural reinforced concrete walls to accommodate new infrastructure. This project marks a major milestone for Castings Technology, one of the UK’s leading casting companies, as they ramp up production and continue their global growth.
Our work here is crucial to ensuring that the company has the space and foundation to meet growing demand while maintaining its position as a leader in the casting industry worldwide. The project will provide cutting-edge facilities that support manufacturing, research, and innovation.
RLX Construction is proud to collaborate with some of the best in the industry on this, including Austin Fletcher Ltd, Race Cottam Associates, and CASTREE—consultants whose expertise is integral to making this vision a reality. The scope of the work includes everything from heavy civil engineering to fine-tuned structural design, ensuring that every detail meets the highest standards of quality and precision.
Our team has completed stripping away the old concrete, preparing the site for the new, high-strength foundations, the installation of the reinforced steel slab and the construction of the concrete walls.
New project in Rugby: Medical Centre Refurbishment & New Extension
In another exciting development, RLX Construction is also underway with a medical centre refurbishment in Rugby, which is being carried out in phases.
The first phase of the refurbishment involves updating the consulting rooms — including upgrading internal systems, improving energy efficiency, and modernising the interior to improve both function and aesthetics. The final phase will see the construction of a new build extension that will expand the medical centre, adding much-needed space for additional patient care rooms, consultation areas, and improved waiting facilities.
As with all of our projects, we are committed to delivering quality and sustainability. Our work in Rugby is designed to enhance patient care, improve the user experience, and contribute positively to the overall well-being of the local community. We are working closely with the medical team and consultants to ensure that the final facility will be one that the community can be proud of for decades to come.
Thank you for your continued support! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to break ground on exciting new projects.
