New Specialist Project: High Consequence Infectious Disease Facility
April has been another extremely busy and productive month for RLX, with significant progress being made across several complex healthcare refurbishment and infrastructure projects throughout South Yorkshire.
Alongside our ongoing refurbishment works within the Purple Outpatients Department for one of our long-standing and highly valued clients, Sheffield Children’s Hospital, we have also started an additional specialist healthcare project within the live hospital environment.
The new scheme involves the conversion of the existing Ward 3 bedroom/negative pressure room into a new High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) facility, together with the refurbishment and conversion of an existing room within the ICU/HDU department to create a second dedicated HCID site. These specialist environments require enhanced infection prevention and control measures, upgraded ventilation considerations and carefully managed construction sequencing to ensure the facilities meet the strict operational requirements of the Trust.
Delivering works within live clinical environments always requires close collaboration with hospital staff, estates teams and infection control departments. Extensive segregation measures, temporary protections, controlled access routes and phased working arrangements have been implemented throughout the project to maintain the safety of patients, visitors and clinical teams, whilst ensuring minimal disruption to day-to-day hospital operations.
Enabling Safe Access for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
Also during April, we began Phase 2 of our ward refurbishment programme for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Again, due to the sensitive nature of the live ward environment, this phase demanded significant logistical planning and coordination prior to commencement. To facilitate access to the work areas while reducing disruption to staff and patients, a temporary site entrance has been formed at first-floor level, accessed via a purpose-built scaffold staircase system. This carefully planned solution enables the project team to maintain safe and controlled segregation from operational hospital areas throughout the duration of the works.
Transforming Staff and Patient Environments at Duke Medical Centre
Phase 2 of another medical refurbishment scheme, at Duke Medical Centre in Sheffield, also kicked off in April. This project involves the complete reconfiguration and modernisation of existing staff welfare areas, consulting rooms and accessible toilet facilities to improve both functionality and patient experience. One of the key elements of the refurbishment is the installation of a new disabled access lift, which has required extensive structural coordination, detailed survey work and careful design development to integrate the new lift structure within the constraints of the existing building.
As with all healthcare projects, maintaining efficiency while working within operational clinical environments remains a key priority. Our teams continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the highest standards of safety, quality and communication are maintained throughout every stage of delivery.
