Project Overview
- Client: Barnsley Hospital
- Location: Barnsley
- Department: Education Centre
- Duration: 40 Weeks
- Brief: Internal Phased refurbishment & New build extension
RLX Construction delivered a comprehensive, multi-phased internal refurbishment and new build extension at the Education Centre within Barnsley Hospital. The project was carried out in a live hospital environment, requiring meticulous planning, clear communication, and close collaboration with both hospital staff and the estates team.
Refurbishment Works (Internal – Multiple Phases)
The internal refurbishment was undertaken in carefully planned phases to avoid disruption to hospital operations and allow continuous use of the facility by clinical educators and staff. The scope of refurbishment included:
- Full Strip-Out & Reconfiguration: Removal of existing internal finishes, partitions, and redundant services, followed by internal layout alterations to improve functionality and flow.
- New Mechanical & Electrical Installations: Complete upgrade of all M&E systems including new heating, ventilation, lighting, fire alarm systems, small power, and data infrastructure to meet current standards and improve energy efficiency.
- Suspended Ceilings: Installation of new suspended ceiling grids and tiles throughout, incorporating energy-efficient LED lighting and integrated air diffusers.
- New Fire Doors & Joinery: Installation of certified fire-rated doorsets and high-quality bespoke joinery items including Reception counter, IPS cubicles and worktops.
- Glass Partitioning: Modern glazed partitions were installed to create light-filled, flexible spaces while maintaining acoustic privacy where needed.
- Floor Finishes: Replacement of all floor coverings with a mix of durable vinyl, carpet tiles, and safety flooring, tailored to the use of each area.
- Internal Decoration: Complete redecoration of all walls, ceilings, and joinery using durable, hospital-grade finishes to create a bright, clean, and professional environment.
New Build Extension
Following the refurbishment, RLX Construction progressed to the construction of a new single-storey extension to the rear of the existing building. This additional space provides much-needed capacity for training rooms and support facilities.
The extension was constructed using traditional building methods to match and complement the existing structure, incorporating:
- Structural steel frame and blockwork construction
- External rendered elevations
- New roof structure with appropriate insulation and drainage
- Continuation of M&E services from the main building
- High-performance windows and doors for thermal efficiency
- Seamless integration with internal finishes and access routes
Project Delivery & Coordination
Given the live environment, RLX Construction maintained constant communication with hospital departments and the estates team to plan works around key operational hours. Temporary access routes, hoardings, and noise-reduction measures were implemented to minimise disruption and maintain a safe working environment for both staff and patients.
