The Purple Outpatients: A Bright New Outpatient Facility Delivered by RLX Construction
The outpatients department at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust – a full refurbishment and transformation of an existing building at Northumberland Road into a modern, welcoming environment for the Trust’s outpatient services. The completed facility gives young patients and their families bright, comfortable clinical spaces designed around the way the department actually works.
Working alongside the Trust, architect, and the wider design team, RLX Construction reconfigured the building, creating new clinical capacity at ground floor, relocating staff accommodation above it, and upgrading the ventilation and accessibility infrastructure needed to support it all.
The full delivery of the project, including:
- Conversion of ground floor space into clinical rooms and associated support spaces
- Installation of a new accessible platform lift between Level A and Level B, improving accessibility and connectivity throughout the building
- Office support accommodation – staff rest and office space – to Level B
- Reconfiguration of existing WC provision to include a fully compliant accessible WC
- New ceilings and associated office works at Level B
- Localised ventilation throughout Levels A, B and C
- Associated plant and ductwork works at roof level including new air handling unit.
- Full internal finishes package
- Coordination with specialist subcontractors, the design team and the Trust’s estates team
A key focus throughout was the quality of the internal environment. Finishes, colours, materials and detailing were carefully considered and executed to create a space that feels bright, inviting and comfortable, whilst still meeting the practical demands of a busy healthcare setting – durability, infection control and ease of maintenance.
Challenges and Achievements
Converting an occupied office building into a compliant, clinical space presented a number of practical challenges. Introducing a platform lift and new ventilation into an existing structure required careful sequencing and close coordination with the design team.
The programme was tight and the standard of finish non-negotiable. Our site team’s attention to detail and willingness to work collaboratively with the Trust and design team were central to achieving the level of quality the completed spaces demonstrate.
A Project with Purpose
At RLX Construction, we’re proud to have delivered a facility that will serve children, young people and their families for years to come. The Outpatients department is a demonstration of what a considered refurbishment can achieve – turning underused space into high-quality clinical accommodation.
We’d like to extend our thanks to Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust for their collaborative approach and continued support throughout, and to recognise our site team and everyone involved in delivering the works.
